Changing to the Japan Fukuoka Mission

In February of 2010, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints published this statement to let its members know of changes happening in the Mission Field. Paul's mission, the Japan Hiroshima Mission, was one of the missions affected by this change. This is another article about the change to his mission. As of the first of July 2010, he is a part of the Japan Fukuoka Mission.

*As a side note, I stumbled upon Paul's new Mission President's blog where they have pictures of their missionaries. I don't know if there are any pictures of Paul, but I thought it was neat to see his mission from a different perspective!

All I Want for Christmas...

Don't worry, I'm not getting homesick. And, even with Elder Bronner counting down the days (33 left) I'm not getting trunky. . . not really.

So we were walking through the amazing two-story dollar store megaplex recently, and Mariah Carey's "All I Want for Christmas is You" was playing on the radio. That brought back good memories ;)

Elder Bronner and I are doing great! We have been receiving a LOT of apples lately. WAY too many to eat, so we've made a few apple pies to give slices away to investigators and less active members. Wow, it smelled kind of like Christmas. We're feeling very optimistic, especially since one of our Philipino investigators looks like she's really close to baptism. She has been in contact with her member sister and brother, coming to church, and is still interested in learning more. We talked about baptism last time, so we hope to have a date set this week.

I think having Elder Bronner around is good for me. It's helping me get used to the teasing of an older brother (didn't really have that growing up). We're pretty unified, and are trying to be obedient and work hard. We have a goal to see a baptism before Elder Bronner heads home. I'm excited! We spent some time today with our other two Philipino Investigators, translating for them at a Job Assistence center. Things didn't really work out, but we took them out to eat at a REALLY delicious Indian and Tai all you can eat restaurant. So delicious!

Not too much to report on this week, but I am loving life.
Please keep me in your prayers. I'm doing okay, but the opposition is trying to rear up again. No worries, in the strength of the Lord I can and will do all things! Zone Conference on Wednesday! Yea!

We might be over at a member's house for Christmas.
Hey, is the 'Lude still alive and kicking? Or has good ol' Rusty passed away? (The car)

I'm thankful for you and your love. Yes, this is much more bearable thank boot camp. And wow, I keep having military dreams, once a week or so. I need to write Sergeant Walker, probably today, for my Annual Muster.

Anyway, you are amazing!

Love,
Elder Peterson

It's A Wonderful Life... With Miracles and More!

This last week was AMAZING! Elder Bronner and I had 47 working hours (the most I've ever had with a companion).... I'd say we worked pretty hard!

We've been encountering a lot of miraculous people, that seem golden and ready to speak with us. Recently we were challenged to try to work more with families. We found one! The mother is from the Philippines, where her brother and sisters are members and referred her about 5 years ago - but she didn't have interest at that time. Well, she kindly accepted us into their home. Her husband doesn't seem to have interest, but kindly attended the lesson as well as two of their four daughters (one's only 6 months old). The mother looks like she really wants to know. She called her sister after our first meeting, and came to church with two of her daughters on Sunday!

One of our English students from weekly Eikaiwa also came to church again, she appears to have a lot of interest too. The man from last week didn't make it, but he still seems interested.

It was amazing! For the first time in my mission experience so far, we hardly had ANY time for finding (we did maybe an hour or so on Thursday. . .) because we had SO many appointments! It felt good to have so much to do!

And on the train up to Takahashi to visit one of our Chinese potentials, our Chinese investigator came on board with two of his Chinese friends, one of whom wants to hear our message too!

We talked about this, and Elder Bronner and I think it has to do with obedience, companionship relation, our increased efforts on Book of Mormon study, and REAL faith. I felt that for a long time, every time I tried to exercise faith, it felt like part of me was still thinking "No, that can't happen, it won't work." I'm working on dispelling those thoughts. "Fear is like the clouds that veil the earth from the sun. Faith is like the morning rays that break when night is done!"

I tried making the banana cake. It was DELICIOUS! And the people I gave some of it to really enjoyed it.

Tried making the chicken spaghetti yesterday. . . DIVINE!!! But was I supposed to not drain the tomatoes/chilies? Good thing we still have leftovers. . . ;)

Hey, ask Brother Taniguchi if he has any relatives in Kurashiki. Our next-door neighbors bear the same last name. . .

Church is so colorful! The primary music director that sings opera (audible from the next room where priesthood meeting is held. . .), the Music Director during sacrament meeting who, in a couple of decades, could very well give Margaret Brown a run for her money (tee hee), the 28 year old Bishop who served a mission in Australia and taught us the Haka to perform with him during the talent show. . . This place is so great, and I love the time I'm spending here!

Well, I've got to run, but please pray for us and our investigators! Our teaching pool is larger than it's ever been and Elder Bronner and I need help knowing how best to follow up and act.

Increasing Faith, Hope, and Charity

This week was AMAZING! For some reason, it wasn't until planning last night when I realized in retrospect how many amazing things have happened so far this transfer.

On Saturday, Elder Bronner felt that there was someone waiting for us to contact them in the area book. He was right! The LAST person he called, without even being asked if he would like to meet said "If it's a talk, I'll come!" We met roughly an hour later. He was a former referral from the Temple Square Visitor center a few years ago. He was very talkative and interested in what we had to say. He wants to become Christian, and REALLY is looking for truth. He's fifty years old, but you would never guess it (it's almost impossible to correctly guess ages in Japan. . .). He happily said he would come to church the next day, and kept his word!

Then, during Sacrament meeting, one of our English Class students who had been invited by a member to come to church actually came! She had to leave for a bit in the middle, but came back to attend Relief Society as invited by Sister Obata. Looks like she really enjoyed it, and wants to meet after English class to learn more about the church!

I think it might be due to the fact that we've been trying a bit harder to follow the rules. . . I had been having problems getting to bed on time, and my companion was struggling with getting up, but we've been helping each other lately, and things are happening. Part of it might have been a lack of faith, but we're going forward with more faith. Elder Bronner said he expects two of our investigators to be baptized within two weeks. Instead of doubting that kind of conjecture as I probably would have in the past, I'm holding on with faith. This coming week is filled pretty heavily with appointments (something I am VERY happy about), and Elder Bronner and I are getting along great. I'm excited to see what happens!

Yesterday was full of embarassing experiences! Leaving my bike-lock key at the apartment after a member had driven us home so we could get our rain suits (pouring cats and dogs by the way). A typical Peterson fiasco. . . Then we had a dinner appointment, and well, looks like Elder Peterson. . . ahem. . . had a slight wardrobe malfunction that commonly befalls most (if not ALL) men at LEAST once or twice. . . Hopefully no one noticed ~_~

I am SO jealous about Elder Palmer's new Space Heater from Back to the Future, but I've actually been to the Waterford Crystal Factory, HAH!

Till Next Week,
Elder Peterson

Double Bubble, Toil and Trouble...

I'm doing SUPER! I'm doing my best at being obedient. I've finally tackled the bed-time commandment for the last two nights in a row, and I know I can keep going! I've been trying to pray fervently for more confidence and stronger faith. I think that a lot of miracles are around the corner. I was being a bit hard on myself. I'll work on that too. Part of my frustrations have also been from my companionship relations. Last transfer I had a bit of trouble struggling with what were probably judgmental thoughts; it felt like my companion wasn't being sincere. I conquered it, and started to just try and love him no matter what. And now with Elder Bronner. He's nice, and we seem to be getting along. I'm learning to rely on the atonement during those moments when he says something that isn't really meant to offend me, but makes me a little peeved (like excessive talking about how little time he has left). Just wait. Next week's letter will be even better! My attitude is getting better, and I know the things I need to work on right now. Interviews with Pres. Isa are on Wednesday. I expect it to be very good and helpful. Please contine praying for me -- for me to be able to be sincere in my prayers. I've read a lot of scriptures lately that talk about praying mightily, pouring soul into prayer, speaking in the energy of the soul (the end of Mosiah - Alma; I'm currently in Chapter 8 of Alma).

Well, with Halloween just around the corner the festivities have started! We went to Okayama on Saturday to help our Zone Leaders with their Halloween Party activity. Looks like the "Haunted House" we were running might have been a little too scary for 3 of the kids. . . But it turned out well! It also gave Elder Bronner a chance to re-connect with a former Brazilian investigator from the year before, that the missionaries had lost contact with. He had a LONG talk with him, and looks like his heart is starting to open again.

Hey, can you try to search the web for information about a Russian Cello Player living in Tokyo named Dimitri? We've met this man twice so far on the train to District Meeting. He's very nice; comes down to the Kurashiki area to teach lessons.

Our investigators seem to be doing well, especially the Brazilian ones. Wow, Elder Bronner has connected really well with them. It's amazing; being able to talk about the gospel in your native tongue ;)

We found a couple of new investigators last week. They're from the Philippines and speak very good English! We were trying to visit a referral, and then I got the thought to try and find a separate referral family that we had heard about. The first door we knocked. . . Not the other family, but these two brothers that are amazing!! Another appointment with them tonight!

I have to go, but I love you so much!!

Till next week,
Elder Peterson

Hurray for Velveeta, and for General Conference!

I feel so grateful for your package, Mom. It has been at least half an eternity since I last had that delicious Velveeta stuff, so I'm looking forward to trying that chicken spaghetti meal! Thank you so much!

I loved Priesthood Session! My favorite talks were all from the first presidency. I LOVE THEM so much. I was very impressed with Pres. Eyring's talk, especially about being prepared. And Pres. Monson's talk on anger has given me help as well. And someone else in Priesthood Session talked about dads and fathers and spending time with each other, three items for each, and how returned missionaries are probably closer to their fathers at that point in time than they will ever be. I also listened to the three things from the young mens' point of view in the mind set of a Heavenly Father and earthly father.

Really, I want to spend time with you Dad when I get back. I feel that I cheated you out of time that I should have spent with you. I love you and want to spend all the time in the world with you when I return. Thank you for your prayers and love.

I'm working on obedience, and getting better. I'm gaining a stronger testimony of it as well as one of the Book of Mormon. Let me share some of the words from one of my favorite EFY songs: "Power in the heavens, power in the plan, power in discovering - learning who I am. There's power in obedience, it's the truth that sets us free, to find a sense of confidence: Power in Purity."

There is power in purity and obedience, and I'm striving to get there. I love my mission president so much, and he has really helped me. I feel so blessed, and am able to look back on those times myself, where my blessings were tied to obedience. I'm starting to learn so much more!

Yes, General Conference was wonderful! My favorites: Elder Scott from Saturday Morning, The First Presidency's talks during Priesthood Session, and some others. I'm sure I'd have more, but we watched the last half of Conference with our Chinese investigator Pack-san! We were so happy he could make it! But the Chinese members couldn't make it, so we watched it with him so he wouldn't be alone. Hard to "get" everything. It's okay, sacrifice yields blessings!

Last week was pretty fun. We ran into A LOT of people that spoke English on the streets. That was great.

If you remember our Cafe Owner friend, Mr. Wakabayashi (former fashion designer in Tokyo), that we met back in week one. . . We had dinner at the cafe, met one of his friends (a super-high up College 'Salesman' for lack of a better word) who was very nice.  Mr. Wakabayashi even told him about us, why we're here in Japan, and such. Now I just hope we can share the message with him. But, this week, we're going to the cafe on Wednesday for me to teach one of the workers (we got to meet all the workers too, they all speak a bit of English, and they're amazing!) how to make Apple Crisp (they don't have it in Japan!). It's an idea I got a while ago to help the relationship. Mr. W is really excited, especially since we refused payment for it. I'm so excited, if they like it, it could become an Elder Peterson mark in Kurashiki!

Friday, I went to Okayama for one last chance to work with Elder Atkin. That was so amazing. It was really fun, and I'm so thankful for that chance. He heads home this week. He'll be stopping through Utah some time soon; I offered Mom's gourmet meal skills if he passes through Orem; you might get a call ;)

Love,
Elder Peterson

Soaring

I just got wonderful emails from the ones I love! Thank you so much!

Sundy talked about how sometimes on the mission she was soaring, then others she was running, walking, or crawling. All with the help of the Lord. Right now, I feel very good. Conference is just around the corner for us. We have to wait a week for the translation to get here on DVD (but we do still get to watch it in our native language!)

Lately, there's been a big focus in our mission on this Process of Purification. I think I mentioned it a while ago, but I realized that I wasn't giving myself full-heartedly to it. Well, my companion and I both felt like we needed to keep going past the "40-day fast", so I started over. The idea is to purify ourselves, getting rid of behaviors that poke at the spirit, to help us have it with us more.

Friday (after Thursday's Zone Meeting and Interviews), we met with Donna from Brazil. It was one of the greatest experiences I've had so far here in Japan. She started off by talking about how she wanted a "new Donna", and expressed her desire to be baptized. During our lesson, I felt a little prompt to sing "I am A Child of God" for her. She said that she knew the song before we started, and used to sing it with her daughter. As Elder Daimler and I sang, she was brought to tears; she said that she felt so happy. She knows that this is what she needs to do; she said she will change, and give up coffee, and do what it takes.  Her husband is a little opposed, and she's met with the missionaries at various times before, but she said that this time feels different. We asked her to pray about a goal for a baptismal date, and are working with her to her personal goal of talking with her husband about this.  It was such a small prompting, I wasn't even sure if it was the spirit or not, but from seeing what happened as we sang, I realized that it was. Maybe that's why it's so important to purify ourselves, because if we have things in our lives that can distract from the spirit, we can't hear it's soft voice when it whispers.

I met a very solid potential investigator on Saturday, named Ran. He's from China (so that makes two people from China that we're working with right now). We connected really well. He met Elder Daimler last transfer, and we finally got to head up to Takahashi (to the north of Kurashiki) to meet with him. He shared his talents with us by playing the guitar - He has some amazing skills! Looks like he's very interested in Metal (played Van Halen's most famous guitar solos FLAWLESSLY), Fusion Jazz, and Japanese Rock and Pop. We have a lot in common, and I think we're becoming pretty good friends. Next time, we're going to try to bridge his interests with the gospel.

So I realized that I haven't told you too much about Elder Daimler. He's from Bountiful, Utah. He converted two years ago, thanks in part to his Girlfriend. His family is mostly Catholic, and he's the only member. We're getting along really well, and becoming pretty good friends. Since he's only six weeks ahead of me, depending on how things go, we might be returning around the same time.

We've got a Ward Talent show coming up pretty soon. I'll try to send you a copy of the video, because Elder Daimler and I get to participate with the Bishop in doing a Maori Haka called Ruaomoko.

Oh, and I will hopefully be going up to Okayama on Friday for an Exchange with Elder Atkin! He goes home at the end of the transfer, and I am so excited for one last opportunity to work with him. Seeing him as Zone Leader has been amazing. I think I was a bit hard on him when he was with me in Izumo.

Oh yeah, I heard about the new temple announced in Sapporo, Japan! That's so exciting!! Hopefully we'll be getting either an Okayama or Hiroshima temple someday. . . We'll see.

I'm very thankful for all the support and prayers I've been getting. I feel really good right now. We're seeing a lot of good things, and a lot of small miracles. Like yesterday, we stopped to say hello to our Cafe-Owner Friend Mr. Wakabayashi, when a group of High School BMX riders passed by and said "Hey, Peterson!" They totally remembered me!

Oh yeah, and we randomly had to teach Gospel Principles on Sunday. . . It was almost the lesson on the Law of Chastity. . . EVERYONE in the class was married and/or a lot older than us. So. . . we switched to Temple Work and Family History. . . phew. . . Oh and then we taught the Plan of Salvation for the Aaronic Priesthood class.

Well, more coming next week. I love you so much!

"Lord of the Rings" Relates to Missionary Work

J.R.R. Tolkien, in The Fellowship of the Rings, wrote this:

"The road must be trod, but it will be very
hard. And neither strength nor wisdom will
carry us far upon it. This quest may be
attempted by the weak with as much hope as
the strong. Yet it is oft the course of deeds
that move the wheels of the world: Small hands
do them because they must, while the eyes of
the great are elsewhere."

Alma 37:6 -- "Now ye may suppose that this is foolishness
in me; but behold I say unto you, that by small and simple
things are great things brought to pass; and small means
in many instances doth confound the wise."

By small and simple efforts, the young missionaries of the
church really can "confound the wise" and help the kingdom
roll forth!
